Direct mail marketing is a great way to promote your service or business offline. It is one of the least expensive ways to advertise and promote products. There are many ways that it can work for you and help your business grow. Below are some dos and don’ts that will assist you with your direct marketing efforts.    

Do choose your target customers.  You should target your market by finding out whom and where they are.  Find out who can benefit from your product or service.  Generate a list of features and benefits that your product or service provides.  For example, if you sell auto repair software, find work at home auto mechanics as well as motor companies that purchase software packages on a regular basis.  Write down things about your software packages and compare it to other packages on the market.  Research auto forums on the internet to find out what mechanics and companies want and need in an auto repair software package.  This should help you find the basic information you need for your target customers.

Don’t’ waste time and money by sending out your information to just anyone you can think of. Direct mail marketing is not expensive but you want to get as much out of your marketing efforts as possible.   100’s of bad leads can lead to frustration. Go after the one good lead that could make a sale.    

Do test the waters once you have found your target audience.  Begin with small size mailings and continue to learn by testing and improving your marketing campaign.  Always track your mailings and responses you receive back.

Don’t’ just mail it and forget it.  If you make contact with a potential customer, it is a good chance that your direct mail marketing efforts are working.  Don’t stop with one mailing but stay with it.

Don’t forget to include your website address on the post card. Always put an offer in your message to persuade the possible client or customer to visit your site.  This is a great direct mail marketing strategy because it drives traffic to your landing page on your website. In addition, it provides even more information about your business and captures the attention of your next potential customer.

You could also look into the software that allows a customer to hold the mouse pointer over an image and zoom into it.  This usually also allows the customer to move the mouse and see various parts of the object incredibly up close.  Remember in your online marketing strategy that everything you do to bring the customer closer to the item they want to purchase will increase the likelihood of a sale. You’ll also want to ensure that your shopping cart and checkout system is as absolutely simple and easy as you can make it.  Any slight hangup, delay or problem is just one more reason for the customer not to buy from you.

If you don’t sell products but services or information instead, don’t discount the addition of pictures to your website.  Screen shots are particularly helpful when selling software, for instance.  While adding pictures doesn’t require much technology, you’ll want to give your website more appeal by adding sound and video.
