Q&A: how long does the copyright on a piece of software last?

Question by linkbowser12: how long does the copyright on a piece of software last?
i am wondering this for the idea of software no longer sold on the market. is it legal to download, say, Dragon Naturally Speaking 8, as it is no longer sold through the company

this is simply to remain in the law and not to break it.

P.S. yes, sometimes the law may not be enforced, but it is still a law. so in this case, I just want the law
