What web design software should I use?

I’m creating a website for my boss’s real estate business as a favor. I’ve already bought hosting and created a domain for his site from BlueHost. I need Web Design Software, preferably a free download, that isn’t all too difficult to understand. This is all new to me.

Please help… Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!
Also, I’ve downloaded FileZilla as my FTP… Idk if the software has to be compatible with this program.
Wow! Great information!!! Thank you to everyone who answered!

Ugh, don’t use Dreamweaver, ever. It’s huge, bloated, and unnecessary.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. You’ll go a lot further if you take the time to learn HTML and CSS the right way: by doing it yourself. Don’t ever rely on a WYSIWYG to do it for you. You’re just making more work for yourself in the long run.

Having said that, everything you need to design and develop a site can be done with all free tools, and yes, Filezilla is a nice free FTP client that you can use to upload your files to the web host.

Apart from that, you’ll just need a decent text editor. If you’re using windows (and I am assuming you are), use Notepad++. No, I didn’t say Notepad, I said Notepad++ (link in the source section below.) :)

I’ve also included some more links to some free apps that you can use to develop sites and learn the basics.

I’ll update this post with maybe some more links in the future, but this should be enough to get you started for now.

Good luck! :)

Can I use web design software and then transfer the pages directly to my website (please read)?

Please explain to me like a 2 year old: What is web hosting? Do I need it if I want to design my web pages using Komposer and then transfer the pages to my website?

Hosting is what you need in the first place – it is a service where you pay a monthly or annual fee to someone who operates one or more web servers.

Once you are setup with hosting, and you become familiar with uploading files (i.e. HTML pages) to your hosting account on the web server, you will be able to browse to whatever domain name you’ve chosen and view your pages there. The specific tool to use is up to you. Some people use a simple editor like MS Notepad and a free FTP program to do the uploads, while others use WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver and Frontpage, where the editing, uploading and other useful features are included.
